The Uruguayan defender was sent off directly in Barcelona’s last match against Valencia in the twenty-fourth round of the Spanish Premier League.
The match, which ended in a 1-0 victory for Barcelona with difficulty at the Camp Nou, saw Araujo sent off in the 59th minute after he blocked the Valencia striker while he was on his way to the only goal of Ter Stegen.
Barcelona leads the La Liga standings with 62 points, a full 9 points ahead of second-placed Real Madrid, with 53 points, while Valencia occupies the penultimate position with 23 points and is struggling to survive.
Today, Wednesday, the Spanish League Competitions Committee announced the penalties for the 24th round, which included the penalty for Ronald Araujo, as it was decided to suspend him for one match. The expulsion came after a tactical act, not a disciplinary act, or for misconduct or assault, which necessitates a one-match suspension.
After that punishment, Araujo will miss Barcelona’s match against Athletic Bilbao in San Mames next Sunday, provided that he will be available under Xavi’s supervision, starting with Real Madrid’s El Clasico match on Sunday, March 19, in the 26th round of the Spanish League.
